No roos hopping around the campsite today. The other camper and his three young lads were already up and about. Nice guy but we were lucky enough to have booked our pitch before him as he booked out the rest of the site. $6 administration cost for as many pitches as you want. It got us thinking that a lot of the sites we looked at were full. If everyone books out the whole site (between 4 and 6 pitches) it’s not fair on others who want to camp.

We packed up and set off early as we needed supplies and it was a 3-4 hour drive. Plus it’s Australia Day soon and a bank holiday weekend. We wanted to be far away from the hustle and bustle of the cities and towns so were heading way up high in the mountains to Dingo Tops.

All the signs said this was koala territory. We kept our eyes peeled to the road and the eucalyptus trees but alas in this heat (31⁰C) they had probably sought the sanctuary of the cooler forest. Even without seeing the cute, cuddly koalas one could only admire the natural beauty of the surroundings, mountains and forests for as far as your eyes could see.

A stop for fuel, groceries, and a leg stretch at Wingham found us in a town devastated by floods in 2025. The worst in recorded history which left the whole town submerged under water. The effects could still be seen all around as the whole town had to be rebuilt from scratch. This was yet another lesson of how powerful mother nature can be and how our own actions through global warming can have on communities around the globe.

We took the scenic route to the campsite. 23km on gravel tracks, slowly winding up, down and around the mountains to reach our destination.

Steeped in history, this was one of the sites in the 1990s where people stood up to the huge commercial logging companies that were ripping the heart out of this glorious land. It took Police to intervene and a few years later the area became a protected site. Machinery and signs are scattered around the area remembering a time gone by.

We set up camp, had our supper and went for a walk through the forest before returning to a glass of vino and a game of cards.

Surrounded by a host of curious birds and insects of all colours, shapes and sizes we settled down for the night.
